Dear Birdy,

The problem for supplying the main buyers in Auckland is that they like very much the large corms that can be produced in the tropical Pacific. In the Far North, with especially warm pockets of land, and high fertility, an abundant summer water, it might be possible to get close to something acceptable. I once met someone who was hoping to use heated water from hotsprings to heat pipes in the ground under taro. In Japan, the same thing is achieved with black plastic - which also keeps weeds down. There is even a special black plastic designed to degrade properly so that it does not become an environmental menace....
In any case, please try contacting Dr Bussell at Unitech, Auckland, for more information about trials for the Auckland market.
