Taro gelato - recipe details translated

The very easy “Urawaza Gelato” (a taro gelato)

Making a nice sticky gelato at home without a professional ice cream machine is regarded as difficult. However, it can be made at home very easily!

This gelato is also very nutritious. The recipe was appreciated by all the Itoh family.

Material

The main material of this Urawaza gelato is - don’t be surprised - taro! You may not like taro but do not worry as it does not taste like taro at all. That is the reason why this recipe is called Ura-waza (clever) cooking. [If you do like taro, it does have a nice smooth texture if good taro is used].

Basic Vanilla Recipe:

200g of boiled taro

4 big spoonful of fresh cream

4 big spoonful of condensed milk

4 big spoonful of sugar

[one or two] drops of vanilla essence [to taste]

Preparation

Boil taro with a small spoonful of fresh lemon juice, until taro becomes soft, then cool it (e.g. with cold water). Put all ingredients in a food processor and mix at high speed for 30 seconds. Do not use an ordinary juice mixer. The ingredients do not have much water, so the mix becomes stiff and may cause damage. Be sure to use food processor.)

Put the mix in a plastic or metal pan and freeze it for 1.5 hours

Enjoy it in the style of your choice (with or without a cone, etc.).

*********

Usually when we make ice cream, we have to stir it during the freezing period to make it soft. With this taro recipe, taro’s stickiness keeps air inside so no extra work is needed - just wait! It is incredibly easy, and how about the taste?

Opinions

Ken Shimura: “I would have never known it is made from taro unless I was told so. I don’t like taro or potato so much but I like this gelato!”

Rikako: “ Super! I want to make this for my children as it is nutritious.”

Shiro Itoh: “It doesn’t taste like taro. Where has it gone?”

They all gave appreciation.
